My concussion might not have been so traumatic had it been treated in the beginning but it was virtually untreated for one year. I was having trouble working, speaking, thinking, confusion hit me so hard, I developed anxiety about leaving my house to go to the store for milk or to go to my therapy sessions. I got to the point where I was not able to work as I was a crisis intervention worker and I could not do my duties, my employer let me go. I became depressed and I was told by my concussion specialist that I need to grieve my past life, this is a process that I am struggling with. I have had many doctors tell me I will not be going back to full time work and I will maybe go back to part-time work under strict rules and conditions and it would most likely need to be a work from home job.
I have been trying for the last 18months to apply for CPPD and the DTC through Service Canada and CRA respectively, the process is long and confusing and everyone I hear from tells me “you won’t get approved the first time.” I did end up having to appeal both because I did not get them on my first application, also worth noting is that my CPPD could not be filed online which I had went through the process and it was not until 6 weeks later I was told I had to file in paper format. I called after receiving that later and they could see my application but would not attach my medical paperwork to it because I fell under a special group of people that my SIN was used in the system before everything was electronic (something from when my dad was sick and passed away). So I completed the paperwork and dropped it into the office and waited, I was denied. I called to ask question and I was told that my doctor did not use harsh enough language and to have my doctor send in a letter with harsher language. I completed my appeal and the doctor completed their forms with harsher language. I was then told I needed to wait a 160 busy days which was March the 9th. I still am waiting which I have been waiting on approvals since the beginning of this process. When I was denied the first time I was annoyed and wrote to my MP’s office explaining the situation and the frustration. The are now looking into it for me but being told the same time frame.
I was hoping with having them involved the process would have been sped up but I wrote to my MP’s office as these two benefits are under federal services and I feel like we should be served better. I, for one, am struggling financially or I would not be applying for the benefits. I should have been able to apply online because I was able to fill out the application and it submitted because they saw everything. The process has not allowed me to relax and heal like I should be able to because I am worried about money and then I worry about if I will get approve. I think we should be advocating from a better more stream lined processed where if you are approved for CPPD then you automatically get DTC and any other disability benefit Service Canada or CPP offer and it should assist in you getting the provincial help available to you.
Let me know what you think and have you found the process difficult.

Thanks for reading!
